I half heartedly started a set of Morgan Dollars fully realizing I would never complete it. However, I obtained some important CC's and Morgans in various MS and PL conditions, including a DMPL. I stopped when the going got tough and actually sold off some of my set. I still have some nice examples of Morgan Dollars I have kept plus tubes of them in average VG-AU condition.

I enjoyed your presentation; however, at 13 min 34 secs, you state, regarding Captain Wm. Herndon: "He was the first one of European extraction to know what was what in the Amazon basin"; I wonder if you are or were aware of Lt. William Smyth of the British Royal Navy who preceded Herndon in 1834-5. He recounted his journey in: “Narrative of a Journey from Lima to Para, across the Andes and down the Amazon: undertaken with a view of ascertaining the practicability of a navigable communication with the Atlantic by the rivers Pachitea, Ucayali, and Amazon”, published in 1836 in London. This is not merely a pedantic interjection, but a lead-in to another interesting connection between Wm. Smyth and the recovered treasure from the S.S. Central America. Before Smyth traveled the Amazon, he was 1st Mate aboard the HMS Blossom supporting the mapping expeditions seeking the Northwest passage in 1825 - 1828. During this time the Blossom and Smyth visited Alta California where he and Captain Beechey witnessed the extraordinary horsemanship of the California vaqueros. Smyth captured an image of the "Californians Throwing the Lasso", which was included in Captain Beechey's work: "Narrative of a Voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait..." published in 1831 in London; and it is now well accepted in the numismatic community that this image was the inspiration for Albert Kuner's obverse design of the 1850 Baldwin $10 gold piece that was reproduced using gold from the Justh & Hunter gold ingots recovered during the late 1980's expeditions.
